The Retro-Futurism Movement

Retro Futurism
Though sounding like an oxymoron, Retro Futurism is the depiction of what the future was going to be like around the year 2000, as usually seen from the 1920s - 1960s. This type of artwork often found its way to movie posters, books, propaganda, film and book covers. Think jet packs and ray guns set in an art deco backdrop. It's a facinating take on the future while heavily influenced by the era it was illustrated in. My question? When are we getting our hover crafts? Many more samples at Retro-Futurismus.

Samurai
Created by Three Legged Legs and BBDO New York for GE's Imagination Theater, "Samurai" is the tale of a pint-sized samurai faced with a seemingly impossible challenge as proposed by a behemoth Emperor and his wicked minions.

This truly amazing animated short flows seemlessly from scene to scene using a perfectly synchronized soundtrack by Nick Faber with movements in the story. That's one of the most difficult processes to pull off in animation and really sets this piece apart from others you'll come across. Though incredibly detailed in its artwork, timing and consistent color schemes, the animation is whimsical and free-flowing. I had to watch it a couple of times to really grasp the detail and precision in this work.

Visit Three Legged Legs' Samurai page to view the 3 minute short and check out the artwork, including some nice sketch drawings showing some insight to the character evolutions.

Hubble Photos
When I first came across these Hubble Telescope photos of the universe, I couldn't believe they were real. Looking at these your first inclination is to think they're paintings created for a sci-fi novel cover or backgrounds for a 70s space movie poster. The Hubble should be called the "Humble", because looking at these photos really puts things in perspective about the vast size of the universe.

Hubble's camaras record light from outer space with special electronic detectors, then assign colors based on various reasons and apply imaging filters to produce these stunning photos of space. View many more samples at HubbleSite.org.

Classic Auto Ads
You have to hand it to the late 60s and early 70s. If they were one thing it's consistent. Most everything you find from that era has that distinctive look that leaves no doubt when it's from. These advertisements for late 60s model autos are no different. From the orangey tints to the groovy hairdoos, the designs, photos and cars are just as appealing now as they were back then.
